                                                                   Squirrel Formula Recipe

Picture
1 Cup of Whole Milk
4 Tablespoons of Heavy Whipping Cream
A few drops of Raw Coconut Oil to each feeding (Optional)

(Note: If you are switching from a Commercial formula, start with only boiled whole milk and add a little un-boiled Plain Yogurt with active live cultures to each feeding. This builds up good digestive bacteria in the gut so that you can increase the fat content over the next week to 10 days.)

                                                       If You Have Been Told That Milk Will Kill Squirrels

Please read this study, ( Under "Results and Discussion,") conducted by the Ohio State University many years ago that proved that Cow's milk, with added fat, most closely resembled Squirrel breast milk! Commercial Formulas are made from Skim Milk and are all about profit!}

                                                                             INSTRUCTIONS

Place Milk and cream in a sauce pan and heat on high heat on stove while stirring continuously until mixture comes to a foaming boil. Remove immediately from the heat when boiling and allow to cool. Stir occasionally while cooling to prevent a Casein film from developing.

Keep refrigerated. Shake the mixture well before drawing up each feeding.  It should keep well for 3 to 5 days. Draw up 1 to 2 cc for each week of age. ( Example: a 4 week old will take 4 to 8cc at a feeding.)

Feed the formula warm to the touch, and go slow. This picture shows a 6 week old squirrel drinking from a bottle. In reality, it's better to hold tiny squirrels *upright* when feeding and use a syringe with or without a nipple. With a syringe, you have better control of the flow, especially when they are tiny. If the squirrel starts to choke or blow formula out it's nose, stop immediately and place it's head lower than it's body to prevent formula from entering its lungs while gently wiping it's nose with a tissue until it stops sneezing.

I add 2 to 3 drops of Raw Coconut Oil to each feeding. This adds Lauric and Capric Acid to the formula, that the squirrel's liver will convert to a substance called Monolaurin. Monolaurin is the substance in breast milk that is believed to give babies immunity from disease.

*Please note that the picture on this page is not the proper position for feeding baby squirrels. It was a staged picture for visual effect. The correct position is head up with the syringe pointing slightly toward the roof of the mouth! And, GO SLOW!
